In presented project I made costumes for William Shakespeare drama „Hamlet" inspired by a circus of oddity. Each of the costumes refers to a different disability, presented in the 19th century as a object of ridicule. Created costumes attract, exaggerating various features of weirdness and uniqueness. The profiles are to provoke thoughts and conversations about otherness. Once it was put up for sale in circuses, or today also?
In this project, I wanted to focus on people with disabilities. I wanted to raise this topic from a different angle, without any sentimental feeding on the audience. I have been in contact with people with disabilities from an early age and I wanted to find them in Hamlet. One of my brothers - Aleksander, has cerebral palsy and it was his presence that shaped my sensitivity and perception of the world. he is the patron and model in this project.
I designed and made the costumes for the characters: Hamlet, Ophelia, Queen Gertrude, Poloniusa, Rozenkrac and Gildenstern, the Ghost of Father Hamlet.
each of costumes is made by me. i used mixed and experimental techniques. I used materials like silicon, building foam and more.
