Savestudios was established in 2018 by Sarisa to reduce the environmental impact of fast fashion practices.

Fast fashion contributes to a wide variety of problems. Cheap labor, poor building quality, and the overproduction of clothes create a negative impact on people’s lives and the environment. For example, a building collapsed in Bangladesh due to the low quality materials and substandard construction practices. In other countries, the dumping of wastewater from overproduction in clothing factories pollutes local waters. From a business perspective, marketing and production demands from corporate offices require these factories to produce millions of tonnes of clothes. Every year, areas the size of Olympics pools are filled with unsold and unused clothes. The delivery and unloading of surplus second-hand clothes to developing countries throughout Asia create a very difficult waste problem. Imagine 40,000,000 tonnes of clothes sent to areas that don’t have modern waste management systems. The clothes become piles of unused materials slowly decomposing in the sun.

The transformation of high-quality materials/clothes reborn into artistic designs is the concept behind Savestudios. Every design is created artfully through expert selection of materials and the eye of design resulting in a one of a kind look. Each outfit represents fine art and a unique approach to ready-to-wear.

Through innovative combination of beautiful materials from different items of clothing and redesigned rhinestones and studs from electronic waste, each piece’s character is aligned to the proportions of the human body. The reconstruction and rebirth of handcrafted designs from the imagination of the designer enable a wearer to both make a unique fashion statement and promote the protection of the environment.

About Inspiration SS 2020

The first Earth Day was celebrated in the year 1970. A lot of people were not aware of or did not care about environmental problems at that time. Meanwhile, the disco style dominated the fashion scene. The people then had just started to see the possible effects of human and natural disasters.

Nowadays, we realize and experience these effects every single day, such as tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, drought, forest fires, avalanches, global warming, water and air pollution, and tons of wastes. In order to survive, people need clean air, clean water, food, and shelter. These are becoming difficult to attain due to the environmental problems we now experience.

Thesavestudios brings the models back in time wearing the same fashion but made from recycled materials from the future.

We hope to inspire change in people—reminding them how our environment was back then, and that it can still be saved.

Savestudios has a staunchly sustainable ethos and I know that blankets, carpets and second-hand fast fashion clothes were used to make the SS21 garments. How important to you is it to create pieces that are both a unique fashion statement and which also promote the protection of our planet?

It is very important in terms of the environment and sustainability. SAVESTUDIOS was founded to be vocal about the atrocities and danger of how much fast fashion has affected the world. We can see that during this COVID pandemic, the world has evidently rejuvenated the environment all over when humans have stopped consuming things so much and so fast.
The clothings that we make have only one piece on earth and cannot be duplicated. This is one of the sustainabilities where our products are made to order piece by piece and that is different from the clothes available in the mass market. In a way, clothes from SAVESTUDIOS have a clear uniqueness from draping the clothes and choosing various colors to combine into one, a style of our brand. “Whenever you wear SAVESTUDIOS, it screams for everyone to look at you and realize that fashion and environment can go together.”

That sustainable ethos extends to accessories, necklaces made from recycled bottle caps and second-hand bags re-purposed with the addition ofwater hyacinth basket weave. How satisfying is it to give new life to items that were destined for landfill?

Very much so. That is what we’ve always been doing, which is to take the old materials that were thrown away and “reborn” again. Moreover, in every collection we will have products that are made alongside the local communities in order to generate income back to those people. This time, we’ve worked with 2 communities which are LOCAL WISDOM OF CHAWA BASKETERY, located in Khlong Phlapphla and SLUMFLOWER from plastic water bottles, a community in Roy Krong, Bang Kaen. This is one of the brand’s approaches to develop the Thai skill laborers and those in the community.

AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER, I LOVED TO DRESS BARBIE DOLLS. WHEN I WAS A LITTLE BOY, I USED TO DRAPE MY SISTER WITH TOWELS, LEAVES, PLASTIC BAGS, OR ANYTHING THAT COULD BE UTILIZED AS A STYLED COSTUME. THE ONLY THING I KNEW WAS THAT IT ALWAYS MADE ME HAPPY. THOSE WERE MY HAPPIEST CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. WHEN I WAS TEN, I DRESSED MY FRIENDS WITH RECYCLED MATERIALS AND MY AUNT ASKED WHO THE DESIGNER WAS. AT THAT TIME, I DIDN’T UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF “DESIGNER.” LATER, MY ELEMENTARY TEACHER HAD ASKED ME IN CLASS WHAT I WANTED TO BE WHEN I GREW UP. I SAID THAT I WANTED TO BE A DESIGNER, AN ANSWER THAT HAS SHAPED MY LIFE.
MY CHILDHOOD WAS NOT AS SMOOTH AS OTHERS. MY HOMETOWN IS IN NORTHEASTERN THAILAND, SURROUNDED BY RUBBER TREES AND RICE FIELDS. MY VILLAGE, IN WHICH THERE WERE QUITE A FEW HOUSES, WAS FAR FROM THE CITY AND HAD NO MODERN COMMUNICATION DEVICES. I ENJOYED MYSELF BY WATCHING MY GRANDMOTHER SEWING CLOTHES AND WAS DELIGHTED WHENEVER I STEPPED INTO HER SEWING ROOM AND PLACED MY FOOT ON THE SEWING MACHINE PEDAL. FORTUNATELY, WHEN I WAS IN THE 7TH GRADE, I FOUND THERE WAS A FASHION DESIGN COURSE IN BANGKOK. I PLEADED WITH MY GRANDMOTHER TO ALLOW ME TO STUDY IN THE CITY AND CRAMMED FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL ENTRANCE EXAM. I CONTINUED SEARCHING WHERE I COULD PURSUE MY DREAM. WHILE I WAS DOING MY RESEARCH, I FOUND CENTRAL SAINT MARTIN, WELL-KNOWN FOR BEING THE BEST FASHION INSTITUTION. HOWEVER, AT THAT TIME, I DIDN’T HAVE MUCH FINANCIAL SUPPORT. SO I DECIDED TO TAKE COURSES AT AN ART STUDIO IN BANGKOK UNTIL I WAS 15. DEDICATED, I WENT THERE AFTER SCHOOL AND ON WEEKENDS.
WHEN I WAS 17 YEARS OLD, I CHOSE TO BE A TRAINEE AT SAM HOW ART STUDIO WHICH HELPED ME LEARN ABOUT DESIGNS, MAKING ART PIECES, AND EXPERIMENTING ON VARIOUS TECHNIQUES. I HAD A CHANCE TO ATTEND ART EXHIBITIONS, MEET VARIOUS ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS, AND LEARN MORE ABOUT HUMAN ANATOMY BY TAKING A DRAWING COURSE. CONSEQUENTLY, I PASSED THE ENTRANCE EXAM TO ENTER ONE OF THE TOP FASHION DESIGN UNIVERSITIES IN THAILAND.
WHILE STUDYING AT UNIVERSITY, I CONTINUED DEVELOPING MYSELF BY WORKING AS A FASHION DESIGN TUTOR IN MY FREE TIME AND AS BACKSTAGE HELP IN FASHION SHOWS WHICH HELPED ME LEARN HOW PROFESSIONAL DESIGNERS WORK. IT WAS ALSO THEN THAT I HAVE STARTED CONCEPTUALIZING AND WORKING ON MY BRAND.
IN MY SOPHOMORE YEAR, WHILE PUTTING TOGETHER FUNDS FROM MY FREELANCE WORK AND WITH MY FAMILY’S GRACIOUS SUPPORT, I WAS ABLE TO TAKE A SHORT SUMMER COURSE AT CENTRAL SAINT MARTIN IN ENGLAND. THIS WAS WHAT I HAD ALWAYS DREAMT ABOUT. THE MEMORY, MOOD, FEELINGS, AND THE PEOPLE I MET THERE MADE ME FEEL MORE CONFIDENT AND BELIEVE THAT I AM ON THE RIGHT PATH. I MADE UP MY MIND TO TERMINATE MY UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IN BANGKOK WITH THE RECOMMENDATION OF MY PROFESSORS TO PURSUE MY DREAM OF STUDYING FASHION IN THE U.K. ON NOVEMBER 3RD, 2019, I LAUNCHED THE FIRST COLLECTION OF MY BRAND SAVESTUDIOS WITH 27 LOOKS. BECAUSE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FAST FASHION PRACTICES, I WAS INSPIRED TO CREATE DESIGNS THAT UTILIZE MATERIALS FROM RECYCLED SECOND-HAND CLOTHES AND E-WASTE MATERIALS. THIS PROCESS OF TRANSFORMING OLD CLOTHES INTO MY GENDER-NEUTRAL “DYSTOPIAN STREET HAUTE COUTURE” DESIGNS EMBODIES MY JOURNEY THAT STARTED WITH MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS IN MY HOMETOWN TO THE RUNWAY AT MY MOST RECENT FASHION SHOW FOR SAVESTUDIOS.
