“Anatomy of Structure" is the project that explores the intersection of architecture and fashion. Youngwon Jo, the designer, aims to incorporate the aesthetics and principles of construction into wearable forms. Growing up in Seoul, South Korea, and living in New York City, Youngwon has been fascinated by the changing skyline and constructed spaces. These experiences have led her to reimagine the built environment through the lens of fashion, creating new silhouettes that blur the lines between the two disciplines.
Youngwon's interest in this project was sparked by visits to architectural spaces like the Oculus and the exhibition of Korean architect Do Ho Suh, whose colorful and transparent sculpture of his "home" inspired her to pursue this line of inquiry. Through abstract drawings and collaging inspired by the architects; Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind, she has sought to deconstruct and reimagine the forms and layers of the architectural sites she visited, incorporating them into her designs through screen and digital printing on Korean traditional organdy.
By marrying the principles of architecture with those of fashion, Youngwon has created garments that extend the boundaries of the human body into three-dimensional space, resulting in a collection that reflects the merging and clashing of her two home cities.
